Municipal City Election Information

A general city election shall be held on the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of every even-numbered year. The Aldermen from Wards 1, 2, and 3 were most recently elected in November 2018 and will serve through November 30, 2022. The Mayor and the Aldermen from Wards 4, 5, and 6 were elected in November 30, 2020 and will serve until December 1, 2024.  

Change of Election Dates
The City of Springfield has recently changed its election dates from the 1st Saturday of June in every odd numbered year. Beginning in 2010, a general city election shall be held on the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of every even numbered year. The Aldermen from Wards 1, 2, and 3 were most recently elected in June 2007 and will serve through November 30, 2010. The Mayor and the Aldermen from Wards 4, 5, and 6 will be elected in June 2009 and will serve through November 30, 2012.

Voter Qualifications and Requirements
Any person who has been a resident of Springfield for 30 days immediately preceding an election, or any nonresident who has owned taxable real property in the city for 30 days immediately preceding an election, and who is otherwise qualified to vote for members of the state legislature and has registered, shall be entitled to vote in city elections. These same qualifications shall apply to other city elections and referendum unless otherwise provided by law. 

ELECTION OF THE VICE MAYOR
At the first regular meeting after a general city election, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen elect one of their members Vice Mayor to carry out the duties of the Mayor in his/her absence. The Vice Mayor serves for a term of two-years.
